A Gallup poll conducted<\/a> in the final days of 2019 found that Americans were visiting the library more often than attending the movies. Unfortunately for bibliophiles and film buffs alike, the onset of COVID-19 had a major impact on\u00a0both industries’ footfall.\u00a0Libraries across the globe were\u00a0<\/span>pressed<\/span>\u00a0to reexamine and retool their digital services to meet this new challenge. For Toni Minick, Vice President of Product Management, this\u00a0self exploration\u00a0created exciting opportunities for industry growth and innovation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe see the library in a transformational state,\u201d Minick said, \u201cThrough our extensive engagement with our development partners, we are creating and identifying solutions that will help them to operate and engage with their communities more effectively, in ways and methods their community members expect.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This optimism paired with Minick\u2019s commitment to Design Thinking is at the core of every decision made by Minick and her team. At each step, librarians provide feedback, suggestions, and insight to product development through\u00a0Innovative\u2019s\u00a0Vega Development Partner program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That immediate connection allows\u00a0her team to take an iterative approach to development with their continuous deployment methods. This allows them to look for simpler solutions first\u2014smaller tweaks\u00a0or\u00a0iterative improvement\u00a0that help librarians meet patron needs more quickly. Then when more complex issues arise, Minick\u2019s team\u00a0is able to\u00a0slow down to address it with the right methodology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis lets us build the right solution instead of \u2018just getting something out there\u2019 or sticking to our original assumptions,\u201d Minick said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of this approach, the product management team was able to make substantial improvements to\u00a0Vega Discover\u2019s\u00a0roll-up design and automation rules,\u00a0ability for staff to use the Discover interface to create and manage\u00a0Showcases, and\u00a0streamline implementation and onboarding steps.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEarly on, we identified that direct patron input was incredibly important, and so we expanded our conversations accordingly,\u201d Minick said. \u201cLibrary patrons have changed, and their expectations are different than they were even five years ago. So, gathering input and testing solutions with patrons and community members is incredibly important to improving our products and services.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to patron testing, Minick\u2019s team was inspired to expand the Bookshelf with account information and functions. Through usability testing, the design of the bookmarking and saved lists functionality was streamlined, making it easier for patrons to quickly mark and save resources that appeal to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn every way, the\u00a0development partner\u00a0program has met or exceeded our expectations,\u201d Minick said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Minick adds that she\u2019s proud to follow in the footsteps of tech industry giants like Google, Apple, Netflix, and Samsung\u2014businesses that also utilize Design Thinking.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really about deeply understanding the people you are building solutions for\u2014developing empathy and a connection with them in order to solve their problems or address their needs,\u201d Minick said. \u201cPart of the process is to challenge assumptions and look outside to other industries or products for inspiration.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As necessity breeds innovation, Minick adds, \u201cWe are constantly asking ourselves,\u00a0does it have to work the way it has for 20 years or is there a better alternative?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
